Grade-Specific Water Safety Curriculum
Summer and Winter Themes for Introducing Water Safety into Your Classrooms
Here are some suggested themes for water and ice safety throughout the school year, all the way up to Grade 12! These themes are just suggestions and may compliment any curriculum criteria, but never replace it.
Kindergarten (JK/SK)
Summer: Always make sure an adult is watching. Winter: Stay back from the edge so you don't slip into icy water.
Grade 3
Summer: Distress signals for swimmers who need help. Winter: Don't follow the animals onto thin ice.
Grade 6
Summer: How to preserve energy after a boat capsized. Winter: Cold water shock and how much time you have to get out.
Grade 1
Summer: Pool and beach signs. What do they look like and what do they mean? Winter: The dangers of stormwater ponds
Grade 4
Summer: How to perform a "reach" rescue and keep yourself safe. Winter: Create a chain using winter clothing to help a swimmer out of icy water.
Grade 7
Summer: The dangers of some of our local waterways and how to spot them. Winter: How to check ice thickness and when to know if it's safe to stand on.
Grade 2
Summer: Lifejackets vs Toys - not all flotation devices are created equal. Winter: Winter clothes are heavy when wet!
Grade 5
Summer: How to perform a "throw" rescue while staying dry. Winter: How to slide rescue equipment to a swimmer who fell through the ice.
Grade 8
Summer: High-risk activities in the pool and how to avoid them. Winter: What is the "spring thaw" and how can it be dangerous, even if you aren't swimming.
Grade 9-12
Summer: How to understand your swimming limits and avoid a potentially fatal scenario. Winter: Learning how recreational vehicles operate on ice and when to know if it's safe. Plus, how to gain your Water Smart credentials, even if you aren't a swimmer!
